I was hit on!

At 38, a mom of 3 (2 teens and a tween), who drives a station wagon, and loves sweats and early nights to bed, I have a hard time thinking that someone would actually take the time to hit on me but none the less it happened. I wasn’t in a bar, I wasn’t out with the girls, I wasn’t in the vege section picking out a cucumber; I was walking down the street, before 9am on a Wednesday morning to meet some friends for coffee.

So the story goes like this. I was walking down the street and needed to cross to the other side. I saw the man sitting on his step smoking and when he gave me the friendly “hi neighbor” nod I returned the nod with a smile. When I got to his side of the street he said something to me that I did not understand, so I said “what?” He responded by saying that “it’s a beautiful morning just like you”. I’m thinking, nice a little flattery and I would be on my way. Then he said something else that I didn’t quite catch. So again I said “what?” He then introduced himself and I said, being polite, nice to meet you. I then pointed at his cat that he had a leash on and he said that his cats name was Davey and that he’s pretty cute but not as cute as me. Then he went on to say, “so you’re probably married huh?”, In which case I overly confirmed his suspicion by shaking my head yes and practically yelling the affirmative. I quickened my pace a little alarmed and a little surprised at myself –maybe I still have that thing that makes guys I don’t know take a 2nd look. Then again maybe it was just some guy sitting on his porch with a cat on a leash who was still a bit drunk from last night?

But then it happened again. For our 4th anniversary my husband and I went out to dinner, then to karaoke – yes, I’m a bit of a karaoke junkie. Anyway, it’s a quiet little bar attached to a Chinese restaurant. It was a Thursday night with not a lot of people. My husband and I found a table and I began filling out the forms for the songs that I wanted to sing. Well it was getting late and we were tired so my husband went to the karaoke host to ask her a question about when I was singing next but she was busy so he had to wait. I could see him from where I was sitting, like I said it was a small place. So I’m alone at the table and all of a sudden some guy comes and sits at my table. He starts making small talk with me and the whole time I’m making eye contact with my husband in hopes that he will soon rescue me. The guy makes some comment about me being with someone and I quickly affirmed by saying, yes, I’m with my husband. Then my husband came and sat down and the guy didn’t get up. He attempted to make a little more conversation and finally got up and left. I couldn’t believe it, the nerve of the guy, my husband was equally taken aback by the gall of the dude.

I can’t really say I was flattered in either case, it wasn’t like I was being hit on by a Brad Pitt look alike it was more like Mr. T with dreadlocks and a middle aged bald drunk guy with bad breath. But all the same at least I have a little bit left of what I had 15 years ago!
