I just called.....

Is emailing becoming our main source of communication these days? It sure seems to be, even my 87 year old grandma communicates via email. It's so simple to write one message, address it to 2, 10 or everyone in your address book and hit "send". It's easy, it's simple, everyone does it, but what is it costing us?

What happened to that personal touch of going to a card store, spending hours pouring through 100's of cards to finally pick out one that you know will bring a smile to that special someone's face. What happened to personal letters? What happened to taking the time to actually write out all the words and asking someone "how are you?"? Our children's children are going to think that r, u, 2, lol, among many others are actually how you spell those words.

Even more lost is the art of the phone call. I know in today's world where everyone has a cell phone (even the eight year old down the street has one)it would seem that calling someone just to say "I was thinking about you" or "I love you" wouldn't be a lost art, but it is. When was the last time you called someone just to say, "I haven't heard your voice in a while and I wanted to know how you were doing." There is nothing more personal than hearing the voice of a loved one telling you that you were on their minds. Someone was thinking enough of you to stop what they were doing, pick up the phone, punch 10 numbers and wait for you to answer.

I propose that we take one day a week off and, God forbid, not check our email but instead, write three letters and make two phone calls. Or make 1 phone call and send a card. Or whatever, just to let someone know that you thought of them and only them for the few minutes it took to write the words “Thinking of you” or calling someone and saying, “how are you really doing?”. Or is it too late, are we just a society where personal touch is gone, replaced with keyboard and computer screens……………….
